March 30, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- New York Roof Collapse Endangers Celebrity Partygoers
At a recent Purim party, "Jersey Shore" cast members Snooki and Vin, along with "The Good Wife" actor Chris Noth, were among roughly 300 partygoers who had their evening cut short because of a cave-in of the glass atrium of the Sony Building in New York City.
Ice from an adjacent building broke free and crashed onto the atrium, causing glass and ice to fall onto the guests. The party then came to an abrupt end and guests were evacuated.
After the entire crowd was evacuated, approximately 10 people were treated for minor injuries, including four who were taken to the Roosevelt Hospital in Manhattan.
The two stars of MTV's hit reality series "Jersey Shore" seemed nonplussed by the event. Immediately following the party, Snooki Polizzi turned to the Web, as she tweeted, "Omg roof just collapsed at the purim event! We thought the dj was beatin the beat hardcore but nope, the roof couldn't handle snooki and vin." Vin (Vinny Guadagnino), a fellow cast member, joked that religion may have played a part in the accident, as he tweeted, "Roof just collapsed at Purim event.... I think me and @sn00ki felt the wrath for not being Jewish."
Regardless of the outcome here, legal issues are almost always at play when personal injuries occur. Building owners must keep their premises in reasonably safe condition. The parties who are responsible for this accident could include the owners of the adjacent building, in addition to the owners of the building that held the party.
According to WPIX-WB, a spokesman for the New York City Buildings Department said a notice had been sent out on Friday -- the day before the party -- that called for fines of up to $25,000 for any building owners who failed to "properly clear away snow or ice in danger of falling after the storm."
While the injuries do not appear to be serious, the Purim party accident should be a warning to all building owners to be attentive to the dangers presented by excess ice and snow.
